India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Post Diwali

On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" level.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Several parts of the city recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended limit recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above healthy standards.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected regional leadership appealed to the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Court Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, the court complied with the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed contamination spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have remained as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is attributed to a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from agricultural fires in nearby areas of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Medical and Financial Consequences

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various investigations.

The contaminated air results in high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths annually in the city.
