Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
