The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Tablet Computer
It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys
The preview reveals the young girl — who received the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer avoids is what the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
